News and Notes

-Reports out of the Lansing Eastern scrimmage indicated that Kalamazoo Central, Detroit Southeastern, and Detroit Pershing, looked like the best teams there. Word has it that Keith Appling, the Detroit Pershing's top perimeter threat, will be running the PG spot for the Doughboys this year. I was not in attendance but some of the names given to me by credible sources as players who performed well include 6'5 SR F Doug Anderson from Kazoo Central, 6'5 Soph G Brandan Kearney from Detroit Southeastern, 6'9 SR C Derrick Nix from Detroit Pershing, 6'4 Soph CG AJ Mathew from Ann Arbor Huron, 5'6 JR PG Maurice Jones from Saginaw Arthur Hill, 6'5 Soph F LaDante Henton from Lansing Eastern, 6'2 JR SG Keith Appling from Detroit Pershing, 6'1 JR PG Ray McCallum from Detroit Country Day, 6'10 Soph C Amir Williams from Detroit Country Day, and 6'6 JR Terrell Clinton from Benton Harbor.

-As many know 7'0 SR C Deshante Riley from Detroit Country Day didn't sign his letter of intent with the Georgetown Hoyas. Word is it was a agreement from both sides. Sources have been telling me that the schools looking good for Riley right now are Michigan, Ohio State, Detroit, and Georgia Tech. Some say Detroit and Michigan are looking very good. Detroit because it is Riley's hometown, and Riley's PG this year Ray McCallum, JR just happens to have a father who calls the shots at U-D. Reports have also told me that Kurt Keener, Country Day's coach has been reaching out to schools on behalf of Riley, and one of those schools include Michigan, and the word is there is mutual interest on both sides. Don't be surprised if this comes down to a Michigan and Detroit battle.

-It appears that the interest Michigan State once has for the state's top player 6'5 G Trey Zeigler is no longer as strong as it once was. Because of commitments from Keith Appling and Russell Byrd, the Spartans can focus on what they need in the 2010 class, a big man. Michigan is still in the race for Trey.

-Fordham has offered 6'8 Soph PF Percy Gibson from Detroit Southeastern. Percy is one of the top 5 players in Michigan for his class.
